This is a significant milestone in both Nations’ long Treaty process, marking over 23 years in negotiations for Pacheedaht and over 25 years for Ditidaht.
JFK congratulates Ditidaht and Pacheedaht First Nations on signing their Agreements in Principle with Canada and British Columbia on June 28, 2019. Chief Robert Joseph, of Ditidaht, and Chief Jeff Jones, of Pacheedaht signed the agreement in a ceremony in Victoria.
The joint Agreement in Principle sets out the elements that will be included in separate Treaty agreements with the two Nations. These elements in ownership and cooperative management of land and resources, self-government and jurisdiction over a range of subject matters, harvesting rights, cultural and heritage protection, economic development opportunities and capital transfer.
The Treaty will also include lands from the Pacific National Park Reserve in the West Coast Trail and Nitinaht Lake area and adjacent to the Pacheedaht community, subject to further negotiations.
