The BC government is seeking feedback from Indigenous peoples on the draft action plan required under the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act until July 31, 2021.
The Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act
BC passed the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (“DRIPA”) in November 2019. DRIPA is the provincial legislation that formally adopts the standards set out in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (“UNDRIP”).
The Draft Action Plan
DRIPA requires the Province to develop and implement an action plan in consultation and cooperation with Indigenous peoples. The action plan must achieve DRIPA’s objectives. To meet this requirement, the draft action plan outlines significant actions that the Province and Indigenous peoples have identified together and plan to work on over the coming years. The draft action plan is a result of one year of discussion between the Province and Indigenous peoples. It also draws on Indigenous advocacy and leadership, as well as priorities identified in various agreements with First Nations and Indigenous organizations.
Who can provide feedback?
All Indigenous peoples in BC are invited to provide feedback, including members and leadership of First Nations and Treaty Nations, Métis, Indigenous people living in urban areas, and representatives of Indigenous organizations.
What type of feedback is welcome?
The government is inviting feedback on the draft action plan including confidential comments via their website, written submissions, and meetings with provincial government staff.
Timeline
Feedback is accepted from June 11 to July 31, 2021.
